Exemption from the requirement of a work permit
In certain types of employment you are exempt from the requirement of a work permit.
You can work in the Faroe Islands without a work permit if your stay is shorter than 3 months, and if you are:
- a researcher or a lecturer who has been invited to teach or lecture on the Faroe Islands,
- an artist, musician, performer or similar, and you have made an agreement with an organiser on the Faroe Islands prior to your event,
- a representative of a foreign company or business organisation, which do not have a branch office on the Faroe Islands, who is on a business trip to the Faroe Islands,
- an individual employed in the household of foreign nationals visiting the Faroe Islands for up to three months,
- a professional athlete or coach, and you stay on the Faroe Islands to do sports, athletics or coaching,
- a fitter, consultant or instructor hired to fit, install, inspect or repair machines, equipment, computer programmes or similar items. Read more about the so-called “fitter rule” here.
If you stay for a period that is longer than 3 months, you must apply for a residence and work permit before you start working.
